Overall Review:

A truly enthralling thriller! I have to admit this book started slow. I was reading about 10 pages at a time just to make progress, then BANG! I couldn’t stop. This story takes place from the point of view of Frankie Elkin, a ‘drifter’ of sorts who helps solve missing persons cases as a civilian. On a whim, she joins a 5 year old cold case of a hiker that went missing on a bachelor camping trip in the woods of Wyoming. We follow a group of 8 on their expedition and the twists and turns that trip entails.

First of all, I just adore the main character. She doesn’t come from just the most tragic background that makes her this nomad. She had an alcoholic father, but he wasn’t abusive. She is an addict herself, but nothing too terrible (even though her life is quite sad). I think there is something to be said about someone running that is dealing with things a lot of America relates too. I think it shows that no matter our sh*t we all can have a tendency to run. I love Frankie’s grit and her witty but lovable comments. Most of all I love that she cares.

As for the actual story. Wow. I really couldn’t determine where this was going to go at the beginning. Was it about Timothy O’Day? Was it about Frankie? Is it about something sinister in the woods? I really couldn’t tell. I loved that I was given enough information to be skeptical, but not enough to know. I was suspicious of the boys, of Martin, maybe even Luciana. However, I really thought Josh was going to be the culprit of all the killing. I was relieved he wasn’t. I really enjoyed that the story wasn’t set up to have me thinking about the other missing people. It zeroed in on Tim and the characters on the hike. By the time Frankie found the bodies I was like “Oh What???”.

Making Nemeth evil was also a great touch. You really come to respect him, so this twist was a evil delight. I was also pleased that it didn’t turn paranormal. With all the Bigfoot talk and ‘something is watching us’ I thought this was going to turn into some ‘mythical’ type book. This sounds bad to say, but I was stoked for just a good old fashioned serial killer.

When I started this book I didn’t realize that this was book #2 in a series. I probably will go back and read the 1st book and the one that follows this!
